Alain Johannes is one of rock music's most respected and quietly influential musicians—a songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist whose career spans more than four decades of groundbreaking music.
Many fans first discovered Johannes through his work alongside some of rock's most iconic artists, including Chris Cornell, Mark Lanegan, Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures, PJ Harvey, etc.. His fingerprints can be found across countless landmark recordings, earning him a reputation as a musician's musician and one of the most trusted collaborators in modern rock.
Long before those collaborations, Johannes had bands while at Fairfax High School - Anthym and What is This. He went on to co-found the acclaimed alternative rock band Eleven with Natasha Shneider and Jack Irons. Across five albums, Eleven forged a sound that was uniquely their own. They did extensive touring supporting Pearl Jam and Soundgarden across Europe and the US. Their influence continues to resonate with artists and fans around the world.
Following the passing of Shneider, Johannes embarked on a solo career that revealed the full depth of his artistry. Albums such as Spark, Fragments and Wholes Vol. 1, and Hum showcase an artist equally comfortable with intimate acoustic storytelling, expansive sonic landscapes, and powerful rock performances. His solo work has earned widespread praise for its emotional honesty, masterful musicianship, and distinctive voice.
Whether performing solo, fronting a band, producing records, or contributing to legendary projects, Alain Johannes brings a rare combination of technical brilliance, creative fearlessness, and genuine humanity. Today, he continues to record, tour internationally, and create new music, standing as one of the most singular and enduring artists of his generation.
This Summer and Fall, he will be on Tour in the US and Europe with Drink the Sea, his band with Peter Buck, Duke Garwood and Barrett Martin. He begins his solo tour in January of 2027 in India at Lollapalooza and supporting Foo Fighters.
